if they have nice and established roots I just stick mine in half compost half used soil.Does anyone have a good soil recipe for clones?
this is a good safe recipe.Coir, perlite, roots. Equal parts. Works well for me.
how long are you planning on keeping them in the soil?
theres absolutely no need for amended soil to veg out clones. using something as simple as 1/2 ocean forest 1/2 light warrior is more than enough (too much IMOP) to feed clones through a soil program.
Mista rastas program isnt a bad idea ...... but crab meal takes way too long to break into food for your plants especially in the short time you will be using it.. Kelp meal is just good for micro life .. theres really very very little available food in it. and when your using things to adjust soil ph, its something that needs to be done ahead of time because some PH adjustments take over 3 months to even establish and begin to work.....
honestly i wouldn't make things harder on yourself especially when dealing with clones.. if you do make a mistake or his soil is too hot it can burn the heck out of the plants which also stunts the growth. I'm not a huge fan of fully amended soils anyway they have a lot of different issues they can create. grease monkey is right just simplify your stuff and get a roots soil or ocean forest (id get roots before i bought ocean forest but either is fine) cut it by 50% and plant all you will need is water till you transplant.
Yeah, that's what I did and still do. Some strains (mainly diesel type) would like only having the base mix.I plan to keep them in soil the whole grow. I have them in 1/2 gallon pots, and I plan to transplant them to two gallon pots next month.
I ended up just mixing some sphagnum peat with ewc, compost, and lava rock. I put half a tbsp of oyster shell, glacial rock dust, kelp meal, azomite. I'll top dress with some gypsum later.
LOL someone took offense to truth... unfortunately i am not a fan of TLO either . it sucks and your using a fully amended soil system which is even more of a rip off.. but I'm pretty sure your not making the soils or buying the supplies its very expensive to purchase clean, organic, non-gmo, amendments, bagging, labeling and many other things i can get into that all add into company costs. clearly you can go buy your own shit locally and make whatever you want. but the fact of the matter is your soils aren't being tested to ensure your properly balancing the system.. that the PH of the system is properly balanced and not a guess... and many newer better companies are making systems that feed plants from veg to harvest without ever doing anything or requireing transplanting or anything. Why would you go through all the trouble of amending and growing true living just to go out and buy a ridiculously over priced bag of soil that you could literally make for a quarter of the price..?
I'd much rather just use some peat/ewc/pumice...
They'd do just fine. The other ingredients are for some serious growth , most definitely not needed, but my clones love it.
As far as time allotted for the soil to break down.. That is subjective by all means. By the time I harvest my next bin of recycled soil is ready to go.
When I take clones out. they go straight into a 1 liter pot. Which isn't much soil at all.. I make about 50 gallons of "clone/seedling soil." Which will last me almost a year. I'm pretty sure the crab meal will have time to break down. Just be patient, I mean, it is a staple in organics.
actually no i would say add crab meal theres other benefits to crab meal it works as a bug deterrent. and supplies a good amount of micro life also ... it does eventually break down.. you can get many different grades some much finer down to powders that can be utilized much faster than say neptunes harvest. ... and yes i recommend the alfalfa meal as well much lighter feed also works as a probiotic to the plant in a secondary process....Yeah, that's what I did and still do. Some strains (mainly diesel type) would like only having the base mix.
All The minerals sound great but are definitely not needed at this point.. The only mineral id use at this point would be the gypsum because it breaks down very fast. The oyster shell is optional, I put it in everything , can't hurt to make sure my ph is always in check.
But I will go ahead and say that Phil K was right, I wouldn't go with the crab meal. I'd just go with the base mix with some kelp and gypsum added. Add alfalfa/kelp teas as necessary..
I can't say I agree at all. I mean for people really running with a soil program are buying tiny little bags of this or that. We get large amounts 50lb bags and just have a constant supply on hand. At least I do. Only makes since. And compared to buying hundreds and hundreds of solars in bottles nutrients. Organic farmers have to invest in amendments. However. I always have plenty of store bought soil laying around to. Light warrior. Ocean Forres. Roots. Even some basement mix. Sometimes quick an easy is better.the worst damn part about making soil systems yourself is your ALWAYS paying so fucking much money for the amendments because your not buying them in a mass amounts. little bags of amendments are crazy expensive.
but I'm telling you now buying all the shit and making it your self is more time consuming, more guess work and worries, more left over shit laying around and more of a up front cost than buying a bag of premade stuff.
Both of these posts prove you're an idiot...Not even going to mention the othersthe worst damn part about making soil systems yourself is your ALWAYS paying so fucking much money for the amendments because your not buying them in a mass amounts. little bags of amendments are crazy expensive.

You're doing it wrong then. I've saved SO MUCH FUCKING money by building my own soils. And that's even with ordering a lot of stuff online from places like bas.the worst damn part about making soil systems yourself is your ALWAYS paying so fucking much money for the amendments because your not buying them in a mass amounts. little bags of amendments are crazy expensive.
he sells soil mixes, so he'll be partial about it..You're doing it wrong then. I've saved SO MUCH FUCKING money by building my own soils. And that's even with ordering a lot of stuff online from places like bas.
Stop buying tiny amounts and or stop getting ripped off.
Those store bought soils are mostly peat or coir, that's why they're cheap. Take a bag of ffof or ffhp, wet it down and then compare it to an equal volume of high quality hand built soil that's also been wet down. The Fox farm soil will be exponential lighter than the "custom" soil.
Bagged soils are mostly shit and good for wasting your money. Even as a base you're better off buying bulk coir or peat and doing it yourself.
You seem salty about doing it yourself, did you have a bad experience?
I agree with this, but only on the premise that you don't have any old soil leftover.. which we all should.but I'm telling you now buying all the shit and making it your self is more time consuming, more guess work and worries, more left over shit laying around and more of a up front cost than buying a bag of premade stuff.
yeah i don't do "clone mixes" either... kinda waste of materials and time really...you can AT WORST cut your current soils to make them weaker as opposed to a "clone only" soil mix..he sells soil mixes, so he'll be partial about it..
Phil and I have had our VAST differences, we grow very differently, and some of our philosophies are just different from each other.
BUT that being said i'll say he's been a lil less argumentative recently..
and again, That being said, I do agree with him (surprise!).. for clones I prefer a soil that has already had a run through it, or a simple bagged soil.
I agree with this, but only on the premise that you don't have any old soil leftover.. which we all should.
I don't make a mix strictly for my clones.
BUT i'm not sure that's what Midwest weediest was recommending... I think he was just disagreeing with the statement of it being "crazy expensive"
For me?
I had everything I needed with around 100 bucks or so, and that was like seven runs ago...
So it's waaaay cheaper for me...
yeah granted your having all the excess for more.. i feel that but i think that the basic crap like light warrior (most exsensive option) you pay like 25$ or something for the bag so thats maybe 5 runs worth to your 7 runs with excess.. i feel like if you know what your really doing and pumping out a good amount of stuff monthly then id lean twords making it myself but for the smaller growers.. and even newer guys getting into that crap can break you and make everything much worse than better if you screw up something. getting the soil pre made with no worries or troubles and getting grows under your belt over and over in my mind is more important for people than just jumping in and making crap themselves. ya know what i mean... heck i am all for DIY and stuff and i truly think nutrient or even a lot of the soil companies are eating peoples money like candy .. but there is reasoning behind it.he sells soil mixes, so he'll be partial about it..
