Carbon Filter vs Carbon Scrubber

OK i have a few quesitons hopefully you guys can resolve them

First of all, whats the difference between a carbon scrubber and a carbon filter?

From what ive gathered its the same thing but a srcubber is attatched to the intake side of the fan( so the air is pulled through) whereas a filter is attatched to the output side( so the air is pushed through).
Is this correct?

Secondy, which is more effective? Both in terms of airflow(cfm) and in terms of odor elimination?

It would be interesting to make an experiment where someone uses the trash bag trick to measure cfm on a fan.

You could measure once when the fan is regular.
Once when the carbon scrubber is attatched(on the intake side of the exhaust fan).
THen again when attatched as a filter(has to be blown out the fan)
Then compare CFM of the scrubber vs the filter setup....

Carbon filter is usually always on the intake side I believe it is usually exausted out of the room and when its a scrubber you don't let the exaust out of the room you just blow the recycled clean air back into the smelly grow room just recirculating. I believe thats right
but I might be wrong anyone else know for sure?

All carbon filters I've come across have only 1 opening, either to push air through and out the pores on the sides of the filter (recycling the air in the room, aka scrubbing) or having air pulled in through the pores on the side of the filter, through the cool tube or hood, and outside the room somewhere.

Scrubbing takes a bit longer as you arent exhausting the air, you're just recycling all of it. Running it through your hood and out the room is the most efficient way of cooling the bulbs and odor elimination.

Not the same thing as suggested.
one is like you would see in a grow room
the other is a "cloth" like item made from the carbons, it would work but not as well.
seen more in water systems. its not pellets, dunno how I would describe it
but definatly not the same

a "scrubber" and a "filter" are different.
Id post pics but i dont want to lol.

Actually they are the same thing. The difference is the filter and fan combination is referred to as a "Scrubber" and the filter by itself is just a filter.

samljer okay I know what you are talking about too. The ones that are folded up cloth I guess kinda like origami or something they usually are about the size of a football or so. I know the kind of look like a K&N intake filter made for your car. I see what your saying.

the difference is... A scrubber recirculates the air over and over through the filter, in other words, the air passing through the filter exhausts back into the cabinet/ grow area allowing the same air to be filtered (scrubbed) repeatedly. A filter would do the exact same thing only when exhausted out of the grow cabinet/ grow area, the air would only pass through the filter once..

This is the only sensible answer on this thread. But the followup question would be "which is more effective?".

Really?? This many people think there is actually a difference??? Sometimes i get discouraged with the people on here....A carbon filter is a carbon filter..period. It can be used as a recirculating air "scrubber" or and exhaust air filter. They aren't 2 separate products..:wall:. They should always have air drawn through them with a flow rate allowing 1sec of contact time between the air and carbon material for for optimal efficiency.

Same product, different uses. Ideally you run an exhaust with a carbon filter while simultaneously having a second carbon filter and fan setup doing the scrubbing of grow space air before getting exhausted.

Like others have said it's the same thing. It's just called a scrubber when your running a sealed room and you are not exhausting it anywhere. Once you hook up ducting on the exhaust side to remove it from your room it's just called a filter.
