Why do we need amendments?

When I read the bag of Roots Organic or Fox Farms I see all kinds of wonderful organic ingredients that make these two near perfect growing mediums for MJ?

When I read about soil recipes the ingredients are pretty much the same as the bagged soils.

So why can't a bag of Ocean Forest get me through a whole grow like a soil recipe such as Subcool's would?

I'm just trying to understand the difference. I'm looking for a very simple grow method that doesn't require a chemistry set.

The concentration of nutrients in RO or FF soil is way less than what you would find in a "water only" soil recipe. A lot of people have run into bug issues too, but I think that has more to do with the vendor. The bottom line is that its much cheaper to buy and mix the peat and perlite separately than buy any of the premixed stuff; thats my problem with Subcool's soil. However, the main point of organic(IMO) is to continue recycling the soil. If you wanted to use FF or RO as a base for that it would be fine. The purpose is to be able to re-amend the soil cheaply, over and over again instead of buying new bags of premixed stuff every single grow. You also dont have to dump gallons and gallons of "spent" bagged mix to make room for the new stuff.

Ohh, we can talk about bugs! Nasty little things come shooting right out of the bag :) My friend told me to leave the soil in my car for a few days in the sun to kill them. Haven't tried it yet..

How do you keep all those organics from burning the plants?

Amended soil is cooked to avoid burn. Is that what your taking about??

You can absolutely get great results with a bagged soil. Making your own is better for the following reasons IMO:

-Control. When you make your own soil you know exactly what's in it, and at what ratios. This makes it easier to identify deficiencies and tweak it.

-Cost. I did a break down of it a while back, and iirc it was around $5 per cubic foot to build a soil as opposed to paying $20-$30 a bag for soil that is inferior.

-It's fresh. You have no idea how long a bagged soil has been sitting on a shelf or in warehouse before you get your hands on it

-Bugs: the pre packaged soil almost always comes with some type of bug.

-Environmental reasons. I will be making a soil this fall from decomposed leaves that I raked up in my yard. I will be adding worm castings that I make in my basement, and most of the amendments that will go in to the soil will be from my back yard or sourced locally. When you buy a bag of soil it usually contains guanos, slaughter house waste, and other goodies that aren't very environmentally responsible.

In addition to all of that making your own soil forces you to learn a bit about soil microbiology. Learning new shit is a good thing. Keeps the melon sharp. There is also a sense of pride with doing it from scratch, and it will likely motivate you to become a better gardener. That's been my experience anyway

make your own soil with a good mix of IPMs and you won't have bugs.
crab meal, insect meal, neem meal, etc.

honestly it's simple. Maybe its because i'm used to it, but it never has been hard. no chemistry set needed for anything.
33% peat 33% aeration 33%vermicompost or reg compost.
then add one cup of neem meal, kelp meal, crab meal. Then a half cup of fish bone meal and half cup of alfalfa meal. per cubic foot, about 7.5 gallons)
four cups of minerals per cubic foot
rock phosphates, granite dust, basalt, etc.
Mix in either a large bin or in your final pots, I like to age it in my final pots and cover it with a legume cover crop so I can visually see my soil when it's ready, because the legumes will explode once the nutrients are more available.
Or don't use a cover crop and just wait 30-45 days.
I just like to put them in their final pots so the soilweb/microbe population grows long before I add the plant.
Very simple really.

Thanks for all the input everyone,

What I meant was if I double up on my bottled nutes I'll certainly burn my plants. Are organic soils more buffered? With all the nutrients it seems like the plant would burn.

Isn't the soil "hot"?

Oh I thought you were talking about constitutional amendments. I was just gunna say. Imagine you're playing monopoly. You're the banker. And you could just keep changing the rules all the time. Nevermind.

On topic, think about Hempy and perlite and just add your own nutes. Otherwise DWC. I want to go back to soil someday. Oh wait, I have a dwarf banana project going on and was looking for clean soil to get started. So I'm already there. Anyway, the soil is hot of course so I just can't nute it yet. But this plant will live for years so I got time.

Yea, we used to have those. I read about them on the internets. They were part of something called The Consitution or something like that. :) That was in the olden days...:)

I literally have no where to make soil. BudLife gave me a decent organic idea..

1 Bag Fox Farms OF or HF
30% Chunky Perlite
Happy Frog Organic Dry Ferts mixed into the soil.. Plant established seedlings in this mix. It's orrganic, No additional nutes or teas or PHing needed, just good water.

You can honestly if you have the money and don't feel like saying I built all this with my hands! I would Definitely say just buy some ProMix Mycho or whatever the fuck you want, and a simple organic line of nutes I like Blue Mountain Organics but all are great! Look at BOG on thcfarmer.com he uses Only that soil and like Grow A and Bloom B or whatever and that's it maybe calmag too, but he breeds some of the best seeds there are. Kiss it, if you have the money and don't feel like learning everything just buy it... But later on I promise you will probably be interested in Exactly how everything works and do it yourself.

The Constitution is an interesting topic. It breaks my heart to see our liberties taken and violated more and more each day. It's surreal, if a person pays attention. Most don't. Most can't see past their own fucking tits and dicks to even consider what freedom is. Or, in this case, was. I feel that the Internet was the last frontier It was the only thing that kept us from a world of complete lies, manipulation and censorship.

So anyway. For some reason we are in an era where freedom and the constitution are unpopular topics.. It's as if people wish for their own enslavement.

Interestingly the Constitution was very unpopular with the people when it was created. That's why we have the Bill of Rights, as I understand it. The Constitution was a power grab and very unpopular with the states.

hmm very interesting I haven't really looked into the people's reaction at the time I need to do some reading. And you are Exactly right! But the sad thing is Net Nuetrality Just passed so now the Internet is Going to be regulated and licensed to operate!!! You are exactly right everyone wants to give up their liberty for security, but they will have Neither!
