Help with Trichome ID

How much longer should I wait to harvest?

Thanks for the legitimate responses and, as always, glad to see some healthy, if not occasionally childish debating. I was pretty sure it wasn 't ready, but was also under the impression that some of the clearer trichromes would turn cloudy as they finish ripening after harvest... Or is that not enough of a factor to consider/ is BS? Anyway, will definitely hold my horses on any sample sniping just yet.

You're looking for that yellowish-orangish amber color... When they're about 50% amber it is about harvest time. From the looks You got another 10 - 20 days..

Even the pistils say its not ready yet.

PS. Very nice job by the way....
Thanks for the compliment. It's my first indoor grow and am trying the CFL route. Do you know how much more (if at all) trichromes will mature after harvesting?

Not BS and a good question! Only tried to supply a legit answer......Tend to get huffy when "attacked" and sorry now, to have shot back. We all have a weakness .

I still believe 70 days will have better results,,all around (Everything I run longer then breeders reports is picked by my patients first and I tend to listen to my patients!).....BUT,,,do what YOU need to do....The point is that if it works for you,,,,,then it works!

The plant looks GREAT and your doing FINE!

Good to see a good debate LOL
I would go with Dr Who here as far as the advice given, and just because it is in a magazine doesn't make it right, it is an opinion and often times opinions are shared, still doesn't make it right.

For new growers the best way to learn it to harvest in stages, start at the end of week 6 and take a branch or bud dry it and try it, same at end of week 7 and again at week eight etc.

Plants harvested early will give you a racy head high
plants harvested late will give you a couchlock high

best to find the happy place in the middle

me I wait till they are ripe, I never look at trics to decide that I go by senescence

I'm 55 and started my first grow at 15 and have been till today and will till I die.
LOL! You sound like me, I was raised in the country, my cousin was growing weed in the back... I used to go and hang out with him when he harvested. I was about 6. We always had veggie gardens and such.

I thought I was the only "near senior Citizen" in here.... though, you have a decade on me exactly, come the 25th.

I'm almost 60 and started growing when I was 14 LOL

Well, one way to prove it to yourself, take the same loupe and your top kola, chop it....

Keep watching the trichs after you chop it...

When nothing happens, you'll see who's right.

There is nothing wrong with good logic based debate.

There is something wrong with ego based debate. (I am guilty of this at times and will be the first to admit such. People just piss me off sometimes and I tend to let my ego respond.)

Well I voted for "harvest in stages" and was a little surprised to find I was the only one who has voted that way.

You see I have been checking my own grow today with the scope (estimate some 2 weeks to harvest) and I checked top colas vs. piddly little stuff at the bottom. I have about 90% clear trichs at the top and about 50% milky trichs at the bottom (is that normal?) so if I was to go by trichs I would not be harvesting the whole plant in 1 day, I would be doing it in stages.

But I don't go by trichs. Sure I check them but it's not the deciding factor. It's all of the following things:

1. General appearance of the plant
2. Appearance of the pistils (white vs. orange hairs)
3. Trichome development
4. and most importantly, how urgently do i need some weed to smoke lol ;)

Anyway it's not my intention to hijack this thread and talk about myself...

Merry Jizzrain you are approaching harvest window very soon for sure. Make your own judgement and I wish you the best of luck and a great harvest.
Peace bro!

Well actually your both right, depends on how (and where) you dry em. Both Light and heat degrade THC in the trics SO,,,, if exposed to either you could see more amber. It can also vary with how you trim (or not) before you hang em to dry, if you leave leaves on (some folks do) they take longer to dry (which is a good thing) but it can be a double edged sword as the plant lives a bit longer by pulling on the leaves.

I don't pay attention to trics cause I grow strains that show amber in week 4 or 5 and no they are no where near done at that point. NOTE: if you find a strain that does it 1st don't panic 2nd keep it !!! it will be good smoke !!!!

In a week or so I will probably start my own "time to harvest?" thread.

Can some kind soul please tell me how do you start one of those little votes which I occasionally see at the start of a thread?

ya, im just a lil scared to do any chopping/ testing with my first grow, and i really need it to turn out good. I can't handle that pressure right now lol and true true, as long as you recognize, self reflect, and try to improve, it's no big deal. It happens to the best of us.

leaving the leaves makes sense, even trimming them id imagine there is till some energy in there for the buds to use. very interesting info and testimony on trichs and plants.

This is my point of reference when considering trichomes

https://www.rollitup.org/t/trichomes-harvesting.516184/
that is the stuff being taught in forums for sure !!!

I go by this, taken from the book marijuana botany by robert connell clarke (which is available for download all over the web)

As the previously secreted resins mature, they change color. The polymerization of small terpene molecules (which make up most of the resin) produces long chains and a more viscous and darker-colored resin. The ripening and darkening of resins follows the peak of psychoactive cannabinoid synthesis and the transparent amber color of mature resin is usually indicative of high THC content. Many cultivators agree that transparent amber resins are a sign of high-quality drug Cannabis and many of the finest strains exhibit this characteristic. Particularly potent Cannabis from California, Hawaii, Thailand, Mexico, and Colombia is often encrusted with transparent amber colored instead of clear resin heads. This is also characteristic of Cannabis from other equatorial, subtropical and temperate zones where the growing season is long enough to accommodate long term resin production and maturation. Many areas of North America and Europe have too short a season to fully mature resins unless a greenhouse is used. Specially acclimatized strains are another possibility. They develop rapidly and begin maturing in time to ripen amber resins while the weather is still warm and dry.
Like I said if you find a strain that does this KEEP IT !!!!

Hey, there is nothing wrong with this approach. The way I personally grow does not lend towards harvesting using this method. IN times past, I have used this method to some success.

Besides that, even my wife will tell you, I'm an all or nothing kinda guy... hehehe

Here is a pic taken in week 5 to show you what I mean, you can see it is about 50% amber, Ahhh but it is the good clear amber :hump:
