it is inarguable that surveillance programs have been going on for decades, the only thing you could question is my qualifier: "massive".

how large in scale do you think surveillance programs have been over the last 30-40 years (and beyond)?

i'd argue that they've been bigger than most would expect.
that's not a citation dipshit

The danger of the massive spying and the data collected is that is could be used to:
Target and intimidate individuals.
To silence dissent and opposition.
To front run the stock markets with private information not yet made public.
To steal ideas developed by others.

The intimidation, blackmail and coercion would especially be effective if used against the few. "our representatives" to affect the laws they pass and actions they take. Thereby effecting the many individuals.

The potential for abuse is enormous.

Omnivore/Carnivore were software packages that were basically network sniffers used by the FBI. That is it.

In that piece of paper called a constitution, but we only use that as forward guidance, it's not set in stone. You of all people should know that, especially after having experienced Bush.
No. the Constitutions these days is set in National Archives and under quite a bit of, if not actually inside Stone.

Although, the Constitution itself, is a bit faded now and it is in a small view vault against the wall, it the Law.

It come from the stone during the viewing hours. (Jefferson Building, Library of Congress) Very real to actually see this stuff. Many, many of us still take it very seriously. And that is not likely to change any time soon.
